Speech Therapy Service
A speech therapist’s role is to support, refer and guide parents in learning various communication strategies for the optimal development of their child’s speech. This service is for children aged 0 to 7.
For children with language difficulties and their parents, various services are offered to support language development in childhood, with an early and preventive approach:
- Intake and guidance clinics
- Information workshops for parents
- Individual speech therapy assessment
- Individual or small group intervention
- Support for integration into a daycare
- Support/training for early childhood partners (ages 0-5)
Intake clinic
The intake clinic is an opportunity for the speech therapist to meet with the child and the parents for the first time. This 30-minute interview is for an initial analysis of the child’s needs. Information workshops are also offered to the parents so that they can acquire skills to deal with their child’s language difficulties.
Communication problems in preschool children are also assessed. Various problems can be detected and treated in the short term and, if necessary, the child can be referred for specialized rehabilitation. Communication problems vary in nature:
- Language difficulties
- Developmental language disorders (dysphasia)
- Speech sound development disorder (phonological disorder and/or verbal dyspraxia)
- Stuttering or other speech disorders
- Social communication disorders
- Speech disorders that are part of a more global diagnosis (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, etc.).
Your active participation in the treatment process is CRUCIAL in attaining your child’s goals!
Children aged 5 to 7 (school-aged children) could receive a different service offer if they have never had a speech therapy assessment (including a private assessment or an assessment at school).
